Taiwan will donate US$600,000 and US$500,000, respectively, to facilitate reconstruction in Ukraine’s Bucha City and the U.S. State of Hawaii’s Maui Island, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Aug. 17.
According to the MOFA, under an agreement concluded Aug. 16 in Warsaw by Sharon S. N. Wu, head of the Taipei Representative Office in Poland, and Bucha Mayor Anatolii Fedoruk, the US$600,000 will be used to construct air raid shelters and repair sport facilities for school children and youth in the Ukrainian city.
Wu said Taiwan’s people relate to what the Ukrainian people are going through, as they too face threats from an authoritarian regime. Taiwan will continue to work with other democracies around the world to support Ukraine, she added.
The latest pledge follows similar efforts in April last year that have since helped rebuild 11 shelters, one kindergarten and nine residences benefitting more than 1,000 families in the city.
The MOFA said the donation to Hawaii will be made to the Maui Strong Fund under the Hawaii Community Foundation in the wake of one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history that caused massive devastation to the island.
Taiwan and Hawaii have enjoyed sisterhood for three decades, the MOFA said. The donation underscores the friendly bond between the two sides and shows that “Taiwan Can Help” and “Taiwan Is Helping” residents to resume their normal lives as soon as possible, the ministry added. (SFC-E)
